The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a legal complaint against Taiwan’s D-Link, a maker of consumer and business networking devices that has begun to embrace smart home and IoT devices, alleging that it has unacceptably compromised consumer security and privacy. The suit follows similar cases against brought against Asus, a PC and consumer hardware maker, and TRENDnet’s IP security cameras, and represents a new strategic initiative for the FTC – suing the crap out of brands that drop the ball, and hopefully forcing the industry big-names to improve their IoT-device security via threat of legal repercussions.
