The sorts of companies that spring to mind when one hears the phrase Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) are fairly well established in this industry. Most would name at least two out of SigFox, LoRa or Weightless, the most prominent LPWAN implementations, before moving on to listing some of the hundreds of businesses involved in those ecosystems – the likes of Texas Instruments, Semtech, Telit, Link Labs, On-Ramp, etc. So when we saw that the GSMA had announced the LPWAN Initiative, we were surprised not to see any of those names in the membership list, especially as we know that many are involved in GSMA standards processes via the 3GPP project.
