An important theme of 2016 is sure to be spectrum sharing. With LTE moving into licence-exempt bands, and Wi-Fi taking on carrier-grade qualities, there will be increased blurring of the lines between the licensed and unlicensed spectrum experience. That will see sharing extending further into the licensed bands, which have traditionally run on a single-occupancy basis, along with increased adoption of hybrid approaches such as the FCC’s proposed three-tier structure in 3.5 GHz. Dynamic access tools, cognitive radios and other evolving technologies will facilitate sharing where that has not been possible before.
