Far from being pushed aside by the advent of the cellular NB-IoT, LoRa – one of the alternative low power wide area networks (LPWANs) – is moving towards one of the prerequisites for wireless scale, roaming. Orange is spearheading this activity. The French operator is taking a multi-technology approach to LPWANs, planning to deliver machine-to-machine services over an expanding LoRa network as well as deploying NB-IoT on its LTE networks where applicable. It already covers 4,000 towns and industrial sites with LoRa connectivity, it says, and will achieve nationwide coverage by the end of this year.
