Before we get too carried away with the advent of 5G, it is worth remembering that LTE still doesn’t account for the majority of connections worldwide, after a decade in use. According to the 5G Americas trade body, citing data from analysts at Ovum, LTE now has 38.5% market share by connections, as of the first quarter of this year, with 3.2bn connections worldwide. In some mature markets it is far higher, of course – 76% in north America, for example (the world’s highest), though in Latin America and the Caribbean, its share is only 32%.
