A few years ago, there was much talk about 5G being the first mobile network standard that would transcend the boundaries of 3GPP definitions and, in actuality, embrace multiple wireless, and even wireline, access technologies in a single, virtualized platform. On the eve of commercial launch, however, the narrative has changed to one of a single standard that can be all things to all men, potentially rivalling fiber and relegating WiFi to irrelevance.
