The interminable saga of a terrestrial wireless network to be deployed in the USA’s L-Band satellite spectrum may be coming to a close. A decade after a mobile satellite operator called LightSquared proposed the plan, its successor, Ligado, has finally had its application approved by the FCC. The scope has changed since LightSquared’s first proposals were made in 2010. The technology has moved on from 4G to 5G, of course, and there is now an intensified focus on low power IoT services (partly because low power levels help address some interference concerns from occupiers of neighboring bands).
