When we covered the quartz crucible shortage (which is really the shortage of high-purity quartz, or HPQ) in March, polysilicon production was in shortage at under 100,000 tons per month. Since then polysilicon output has risen to 120,000 tons monthly while supply of the highest-grade category of HPQ is unchanged. While the main shortage in the supply chain, polysilicon has now switched to oversupply, the quartz crucible shortage has continued to intensify. Price reporting unfortunately remains sparse, but this week $6,900 per crucible was reported. Assuming 3,000 crucibles per GW, that means it costs $20.7 in crucibles to make 1 kW of solar.
