Liu Yiyang, deputy secretary-general of the China Photovoltaic Industry Association has observed that China’s ‘base project’ initiative, of multi-GW wind and solar hybrid projects, has seen utility-scale solar installations rise to 48% of the total in the first half of 2023. This compares to just 36% in H1 2022. At the opposite end of the scale residential solar (often built as part of larger portfolios and not owned by a single household) only fell from 29% to 27% – it’s the commercial segment which only barely grew in absolute terms, falling from 35% to 25%.
