As the 3GPP considers new AI applications for RAN networks, Paul Harris, Principal Wireless Architect at testing specialist Viavi, spoke to Wireless Watch, to outline the hurdles involved in testing AI technology in the network. This week marks the 25th anniversary of the 3GPP, which will be no doubt be celebrated at the standards group’s quarterly Technical Specification Group (TSG) plenary meeting in Edinburgh on December 11th. Through this year and into early 2024, the group will complete its Release 18 standards for 5G systems, which marks the start of 5G Advanced and will incorporate a deeper role for AI-based tools.
