Farmers have used satellite GPS systems for decades, but last week John Deere upped the ante, and picked SpaceX’s Starlink to provide connectivity for their tractors and combine harvesters, as part of its ‘precision farming’ offering. Satellite broadband connectivity brings the US farm equipment maker to the front line in ‘agri-tech’ and data sharing – which is becoming essential for large-scale farmers with poor cellular connectivity, as is the case in large parts of the US.
