SSE Renewables is planning a pumped hydro storage project in Scotland with a storage depth of 37 GWh. That’s same amount of power which the entire UK uses in an hour, would more than double the UK’s current pumped hydro capacity on storage depth, and comes as the new Labour Party government plans significant expansions to renewable energy. The project will be a 50:50 affair with Gilkes Energy joining SSE to develop the 1,795 MW / 37 GWh Fearna Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) project, which will connect SSE’s existing Loch Quoich reservoir with an upper reservoir at Loch Fearna.
