The iron price has declined 6% in the past week, due largely to US, Vietnamese, and South Korean tariffs on Chinese exports, although this is also a continued trend owed to the adjustment to China’s housing market. More dramatically, the cobalt price has leapt by 30%, thanks to the four-month cobalt export ban implemented by the Democratic Republic of Congo (motivated by low prices) which took effect from February 22nd. DRC production will continue into local stockpiles, making this a short-term trend governed by the depth of stockpiles held by Chinese refiners.
