The AI-RAN Alliance, a group dominated by the vendor community, has laid out its research and development agenda in a new white paper. While the group will push forward the use of AI to optimize RAN capabilities, such as spectral efficiency and radio resource management, the group’s agenda to use RAN resources for AI compute workloads is overblown. If operators are going to monetize compute resources in the RAN, they will need to work hard to seed the demand and cannot rely on Nvidia to make this happen for them.
