Alphabet has graduated its Project Loon and Wing from its Moonshot division, only a couple of weeks after web-giant rival Facebook threw in the towel on its Aquila drone program. Loon has always been of great interest to Riot, chiefly as a way to cheaply bring LTE coverage to remote areas in a fashion that could undercut the incumbent MNOs. Because nearly all low-power IoT devices have such low bandwidth requirements, the roving balloon system could be a very viable way to bring coverage to remote areas – think great plains, rain forests, or mountain ranges. These are areas with such low human populations that an MNO is never really going to see a return on the investment needed…
