Apollo Global Management has acquired a majority stake in Stream Data Centers (SDC), looking to leverage a pipeline of construction agreements that spans around 4 GW of new capacity in the US. For operators, convinced that there is a role for them to play in the AI-focused edge computing realm, funds to make such landgrabs are lacking. For the MNOs, the dream is a market that shows true demand for GPUs that are installed in conjunction with the RAN itself – providing latency-intensive computing workloads for applications that are very sensitive to delay, and which might not tolerate falling back to a more conventional data center.
