American satellite-to-smartphone specialist AST SpaceMobile has landed a score of new funding, which ruffled some feathers with existing investors, but ultimately signals growth for the low earth orbit satellite services provider. Meanwhile, Eutelsat OneWeb has had to revise its profit outlook downwards because of interruptions in obtaining licenses. AT&T, Google and Vodafone have now agreed loans and purchasing agreements with AST SpaceMobile worth $206.5 million. The two large telecommunication firms, AT&T and Vodafone, have secured front line positions for satellite-to-terrestrial connectivity for their subscribers, while Google will be keen to add LEO connectivity for its Android devices to stay in competition with Apple, which already has a satellite-to-smartphone text service for its iPhones.
