The world’s largest rooftop solar boom occurred last year, across China’s coastal provinces, which is leading to a spate of ‘red alerts’ for distributed grid connection capacity across scores of municipalities. This may not yet be enough to curb the boom – with 100 GW of rooftop solar (of which 33 GW residential) installed last year in China per preliminary figures, and maybe slightly more to come in 2024 – but certainly in 2025 at the latest, the rooftop sector will run into grid constraints. In the meantime, we’re already seeing a ‘yellow zone’ concept introduced across several provinces, according to which new rooftop development is permitted in many congested areas, on condition that it comes with co-located battery storage.…
