Centrica, the £25 billion parent company of British Gas, has come out and promised to be out of gas by 2050. This is perhaps the least likely energy transition we have heard about. British Gas came about because of the sudden reliance of the UK on offshore North Sea gas after huge undersea discoveries back in 1965, and grew from the retail end, back towards upstream operations. It demerged from the actual gas grid in 2000 after the company had gone from state to private ownership. But today is still has around 9.2 million individual gas accounts for home heat and cooking, roughly 39% of the market share in the UK. Five years ago this figure would have been closer…
