A few weeks after announcing its plan to acquire Polish operator Play, Iliad Group of France has agreed to a deal with Cellnex, the Spain-based tower operator, which will bring €804m ($950m) into Play. Cellnex, which is expanding its tower and other infrastructure services rapidly around Europe, will buy 60% of the Play’s passive infrastructure business, which manages about 7,000 sites, while Play will retain the rest. Play has about 8,000 sites in total, about half of them macro towers, and had already been evaluating a possible carve-out of these assets, emulating many European operators which have spun off their infrastructure.
