According to statistics from national renewable energy industry association ACERA, Chile’s grid has curtailed 735 GWh of renewable energy in the first five months of 2023, a record figure up 86% from the previous year. ACERA was cited by national newspaper El Mercurio in its coverage. The paper notes that this is equivalent to 600 MW of solar taken offline (compare to 7.3 GW of Chilean solar capacity) which is true if one assumes an over 27% capacity factor, entirely reasonable for the Atacama Desert where most of the country’s solar is.
