China’s solar utilization rate fell to just 93.4% in February 2024, down from 98.1% in January. The same happened for wind power – with a 93.7% utilization rate in February, down from 98.3%. Authorities have removed a 5% limit on allowed curtailment. Before that limit was introduced in 2018 – which can be understood as an obligation to purchase 95%+ of green energy put on the grid – 10% curtailment was common. The immediate change is a policy decision, one which may be intended to further incentivize energy storage (70 GWh or so will be installed in China through this calendar year).
