After activist investor Elliott Management attacked Crown Castle’s fiber strategy in July, the US towerco has announced the retirement of James Young, its COO for fiber. This has led to speculation that Crown shareholders are listening to Elliott’s arguments that the towerco has overstretched itself in buying up large numbers of fiber assets, though the firm’s management have defended their strategy of combining cell sites, connectivity and data centers to offer a full package of infrastructure as networks and cloud converge. Crown’s CFO Dan Schlanger told the recent Cowen Communications Infrastructure Summit that Elliott’s recommendations were “the exact opposite” of what Crown had identified as the best strategy for fiber and small cells.
