The lure of 5G continues to act like a siren call on major vendors from the cloud and IT worlds. As IBM joins Microsoft, Google and AWS in trying to grow its cloud business from 5G operators, so Dell is the latest data center stalwart to set out its 5G stall. It is looking for a three-sided role of huge ambition – to be the operating system of 5G, via Dell’s VMware subsidiary; to lead in the souped-up hardware infrastructure that will support the cloud-based networks; and to be the platform company that will “anchor” the US-centric open RAN ecosystem.
