Much of the opportunity that enterprise players throughout the cloud ecosystem perceive in the telco market revolves around edge compute. The webscalers may have the highly centralized models sewn up, but they have significant adjustments to make to distributed economics, in which the cloud is diffused to, sometimes, on-premise or ‘far edges’, often intersecting with 5G sites. Telcos are well-used to deploying and managing highly distributed networks with thousands of elements, and of processing data and signalling between central and far-away locations. Now they aim to support new use cases and revenue streams by moving these distributed networks into the cloud and adding data processing for demanding applications in the Internet of Things, Industrie 4.0 or low latency categories.
