Nokia’s new CEO, Pekka Lundmark, has abandoned the hallmark of Nokia’s competitive differentiation ever since its acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent – its ability to support end-to-end and converged networks in a way Ericsson could not. That policy, initiated by outgoing CEO Rajeev Suri, was in turn a reversal of a previous strategy, of doubling down on mobile broadband only (at a time when Ericsson was trying to expand further into wireline). Each change of strategy has involved an extensive reorganization, and Lundmark initiated that last week, though he said this would be a three-stage programme, so more sweeping changes may still be on the cards.
