The latest European MNO to move into the smart home market is the UK’s EE, now part of incumbent telco BT. It has partnered with connected home specialists including Hive, Philips, Honeywell and Google’s Nest, as well as Apple HomePod and Google Home. It plans to let customers add these providers’ devices to their smartphone bills, spreading the cost over a year. The outlook is not bright however. In theory, the smart home is a good way for MNOs to persuade customers to spend more by adding new devices to their account, and signing up for subscription services.
