On September 25th, the 1 GW ElecLink HVDC connector between the UK and France cut out, taking the UK’s grid frequency down from 50 Hz to 49.74 Hz, restored to a stable 48 Hz within two minutes. The Eleclink connector runs 50 kilometers through the Channel Tunnel at 320 kV, and is estimated to be brought back online by 16th November upon repairs to a support structure on the French side. The ElecLink project only began operating in 2022, having been approved in 2012, and Getlink has estimated a $50 million commercial impact from suspending the line.
