Ericsson is showing off the fruits of its acquisition of its long-time antenna provider, Kathrein Mobile Communications, last year. It has unveiled two new radios for its AIR (antenna-integrated radio) family, which are designed to make it quicker, easier and cheaper to deploy midband 5G at scale. With most operators rolling out 5G initially in midband spectrum such as 3.5 GHz, the equipment vendors are racing on to tap into that opportunity. Ericsson already claims that AIR provides a more compact and power-efficient solution than competitive products because of the tight integration of the antennas and radio within a single enclosure.
