Ericsson and Nokia, as well as the German research firm Fraunhofer’s Heinrich-Hertz-Institute (HHI), have unveiled a 6G-era video codec, which has already been positively received by various standards groups. The move suggests that the RAN itself will play a more important part in video compression and delivery in the next generation of mobile networks. Notably, this is the first time that Ericsson and Nokia have collaborated in this field. The pair both have video-based patent portfolios, which they monetize via securing licensing agreements with those they believe use their patents in their various products and services.
