IoT platform Eseye has signed a partnership agreement with Sateliot, to use the latter’s ‘5G from Space’ satellite network for roaming connectivity. The pitch is that the satellites can provide a redundant connection option, should a primary terrestrial network fail or simply be unavailable in the first place. The deal is yet another example of the nascent but fertile industry for direct-to-device satellite connectivity. Satellite remains a significant opportunity for MNOs. The ‘direct-to-device’ (D2D) opportunity would bring smartphones into the equation, and is a way for MNOs to provide high-value emergency connectivity to existing customers – to keep them sweet, and help reduce churn.
