Security specialist and SIM-slinger Gemalto has expanded into smart grid territory, looking to get a slice of the value of all the new data being generated from smart meters. The new ‘End-to-End Security Solution for Advanced Metering Infrastructure’ is being aimed at utilities looking to manage their metering deployments, which now have to view meters as microcomputers, rather than ‘dumb’ analog devices. Gemalto’s main focus is security, and historically, that has centered around a combination of back-end software and hardware. It is best known as the largest manufacturer of SIM cards, but also sells smart cards for ID, passport and document security chips, and similar electronic banking devices.
