Two deals were announced last week that will bring long-awaited mobile coverage to railway networks, one in Germany and one in the UK. In Germany, a new deal between Deutsche Telekom and the railway operator, Deutsche Bahn, aims to fill all gaps in mobile coverage on the train routes by 2026. This will involve the installation of about 800 new cell sites. The railway network spans around 33,400 kilometers, 7,800km of which are major intercity routes. These are targeted to get data rates of at least 200Mbps by the end of 2024, and this quality of service will be extended to a further 13,800km of track by the end of 2025.
