German airline Lufthansa has converted a trial private 5G Standalone (SA) network supplied by Nokia into a permanent fixture, attributing the decision in large part to the impact of the ongoing Covid-19 global pandemic , and the increased demand for remote inspection of engine components in near-real time. While remote inspection was envisaged as part of the trial before the pandemic even began, Covid has upgraded its value considerably and ensured the network became permanent, while a separate trial with Vodafone, that was initially just as successful, has been abandoned.
