IBM has announced a project with North Star BlueScope Steel to use wearables and its Watson IoT cloud to monitor the safety of workers in extreme conditions. The deployment sees the Ohio-based North Star provide workers with devices that will track skin temperature, heart rate, and movement, in order to spot when a worker is in trouble. These wearables are capable of generating huge volumes of data, and so a system is needed in order to analyze the data and extract value from it – in this case, being able to tell when an anomaly in the data stream is caused by an injury or a particularly funny joke in combination with a gust of wind.
