India sets itself near-impossible smart meter targets

  India’s government is biting off more than it can chew, proposing a total deployment of smart meters across the country in just three years. All the evidence suggests that much like the Smart City Mission project, delays are inevitable. The government has set a target of replacing all conventional energy meters in the country with smart meters by the end of 2022. This roll out would have to reach the almost 300 million households in India, as well as all buildings used for retail, agriculture and industry.
