With one of India’s top three operators, Vodafone Idea, threatening to exit the market or even file for bankruptcy protection, government action to support the telcos was long overdue. The administration has finally approved a relief package and a set of reforms to cushion the operators from the financial blows that have hit them in recent years, including overpriced spectrum fees and controversial adjusted gross revenue (AGR) fines. The government has announced a four-year moratorium on the payments that operators have been told to pay to reflect new AGR calculations, which add up to many millions of dollars of back-payments.
