InterDigital is proposing a radical new way of encoding and supplying 360 degree video to devices, in an attempt to shift the economics of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). At no stage did the white paper, from InterDigital’s Innovation Partners group, use the term ‘360 degree video’, instead referring to 3DoF+ or Three Degrees of Freedom Plus. In essence it is proposing new ways of breaking up 3D video into concentric layers or spheres, where all the objects are the same distance from the viewer, and treating each layer in the same way as regards motion parallax and occluded content.
