NTT Docomo and KDDI have paired up to provide emergency wireless communications in the areas where mobile connectivity was disrupted by last week’s earthquake, using new systems prepared in Japan’s national emergency response policy, which will soon extend to satellite connections in 2024. Given climate change’s impact, operators around the world should consider what their governments might soon be asking of them. Japan’s two largest operators have set up remote base stations onboard a ship off the coast of Ishikawa Prefecture, the region on the western coast of Japan which was hit by an earthquake on January 1st.
