The European Union has expressed a desire for its telecoms operators to carry out a series of megamergers andcreate more resilient companies that are less reliant on overseas technologies and better able to scale. This could create European companies that can drive much-desired digital innovation. Unfortunately, the EU currently has no regulation or incentives to encourage these megamergers, although the Digital Networks Act (DNA) that is currently in its commentary phase could help to change this. Nonetheless, smashing together a handful of companies to create the bloc-level operators is far from straightforward.
