The left-wing populist government of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, AMLO for short, has been attacking renewable energy since it came to power in late 2018, mostly with a host of minor changes, and placement of his men among senior positions within regulators. Now AMLO is playing for keeps by filing an initiative before the Mexican Federal Chamber of Representatives to amend the Electric Industry Law. The Chamber of Representatives, as well as the Senate, now have thirty days to review the proposal. This bill, which is likely to pass, would fundamentally defeat the commercial viability of renewables.
