Antenna vendor CommScope has worked with Nokia to develop a more compact Massive MIMO antenna, which can more easily fit alongside existing equipment on cell towers in order to support 5G roll-outs in midband spectrum. Martin Zimmerman, an engineering fellow at CommScope, told FierceWireless: “The problem is that you’re not starting with a blank slate. You’ve got existing equipment on towers”, which may not be able to support too much more weight – and even if they can, operators will pay larger sums to towercos, where they do not own their own infrastructure, as they increase the number and size of their antenna units.
