Nokia Technologies is acquiring French mobile health specialist Withings for around $191m (€170m), in a bid to expand its networking portfolio outwards. With Withings, Nokia’s Technologies division is gaining a well-respected range of devices, software, and around 200 Withings staff. Many consumers will read the headline and assume that this is Nokia acquiring a consumer electronics brand to flesh out its smartphone range, but Microsoft acquired that portion of Nokia a few years ago – and pretty much ran it into the ground under Ballmer and Elop, in two years. Instead this is the Nokia that recently absorbed Alcatel-Lucent – with the joint company focused on telecoms equipment and networking technology. Nokia itself is likely to cut thousands of jobs…
