UK telecom regulator Ofcom has approved the use of the white spaces in the television spectrum by telecoms operators, and says it hopes deployments will be in place by the end of the year. The change is not just for broadband technologies, which will jump at the chance of new spectrum, as a number of IoT projects have already expressed interest in using white spaces for long range communication as well as high-bandwidth video streaming. The TV spectrum, the 470MHz-790MHz band in the UK, contains gaps that are used to prevent interference in the broadcast.
