Telefonica has announced that its Mexican division has partnered with Helium, to provide 2.3 million Movistar subscribers with access to the distributed-slash-decentralized wireless network. The WiFi hotspots that will comprise this network are now being sold in Mexico, online and in Movistar stores, and will provide hotspot owners with token-based compensation for using this electricity and backhaul. A recent crop of reporting from Mexico suggests that Telefonica has appointed JPMorgan to find a buyer for its Mexican operations, against rumors that Telefonica is keen to divest the entirety of its Latin American assets.
