The open source community and ETSI may be cooperating closely on edge compute, but they remain divided over standards for management and orchestration (MANO) of virtualized, software-defined networks. The Linux Foundation-hosted ONAP (Open Network Automation Protocol) is gaining ground because of backing from heavyweight operators such as AT&T and China Mobile (which contributed most of the code), plus Orange, Bell Canada and others. This is taking the spotlight away from ETSI’s Open Source MANO (OSM), which is partly based on Telefonica code.
