A review of perovskites conducted by two dozen Chinese scientists, headed by Liyuan Han from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has been published in the journal Nano-Micro Letters. The review discusses much progress that’s being made including the first commercial pilot lines in Europe and China, and the prospect of lead-based perovskite formulae which will entirely avoid the pollution concerns which lead-based perovskites raise. As described in the paper the biggest ongoing problem for perovskites is still lowered efficiency when cells are scaled up. Only 1cm2 test cells are above 20%. Thanks to the difficulty of creating a large-scale smooth uniform perovskite coating, the gap between small and full-scale cell efficiency is several times that for silicon PV – whose cells…
