As silicon photovoltaics approach their theoretical maximum cell efficiency, progress could be expected to slow down – but there’s been one last great boost to the pace of research, which is the growth of the entire industry by over 50% in one year, continuing 2022’s situation of multiple viable cell designs being progressed. This can be seen, to take just one example, with LONGi ending 2021 with 25.26%, 2022 with 26.81%-efficient heterojunction cells and closing 2023 with a 27.09%-efficient record.
