The first wave of 5G-oriented spectrum auctions may have been worryingly conventional, but it is clear that must change if the objectives of the platform are to be met. To enable a huge variety of use cases, service providers, enterprises and network behaviors, compared to 4G, a wide variety of spectrum bands and licensing regimes will be required to meet the needs of all. More shared and unlicensed spectrum, accessed increasingly dynamically, will be important to support a wider ecosystem of operators and services.
