Carmakers Renault and Nio both came out this week with a new wave of support for the idea of battery swapping in electric vehicles – a concept, which would allow drivers to go from zero to fully charged in a matter of seconds at stations distributed around a country. Given the nascent state of the required technology, it’s failings in the past, and the huge number of hurdles to overcome, the success of these companies in this endeavor could be key to defining their position in the clean transport market of the future – although it’s unlikely to make serious waves outside of China.
